CPLP: Bank of China wants to open delegations across Portuguese-speaking world

The chairman of the supervisory board of the Bank of China said on Wednesday that it wants to open delegations in all Portuguese-language countries, stressing noting that the institution is of a global nature.

“We are happy to open delegations in Portuguese-speaking countries,” Wang Xiquan said during his closing speech at a seminar in Lisbon on international financial communication and cooperation as part of China’s Belt and Road trade and infrastructure initiative.

According to Wang, such delegations are to “serve as a bridge to communication between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, facilitating [their] entry” into China and help “to develop cooperation in these countries”.

The Bank of China, he said, “is a global bank with the aim of providing services and cooperating with governments around the world and we would like to have more and more exchanges in economic and financial areas, so we can be useful.”

China’s trade with and investment in members of the Community of Portuguese-Language Countries (CPLP) ha been growing steadily in recent years, setting aside the impact of the seesawing price of crude oil on the value of Angola’s exports to the Asian giant.

The members of the CPLP are Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe.

At present, the Bank of China has several offices in Europe, including Portugal; it also has an office in Brazil. In Africa, however, it only has offices in Kenya, South Africa and Zambia; it also has no office in East Timor.

The Member States of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) are Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.
