Mozambique: Two killed in Cabo Delgado attacks; both on Mocímboa-Palma road – DW

Two people were killed on Tuesday on attacks on the main road linking Mocimboa da Praia to Palma in northern Mozambique, a few kilometres from where the natural gas megaprojects are being built, local sources report.

According to witnesses, unidentified gunmen opened fire on two vehicles in the village of Matapata at 2:00 p.m. local time, killing one person and injuring another, a South African national.

“The first car was hit, but it didn’t stop. But one of the occupants was shot dead. The body of the victim is here in Palma mortuary. The second car, which belonged to a company, was hit and a South African was injured,” a source told Lusa news agency.

One of the occupants of the first vehicle had been seen changing money in Mocimboa da Praia, minutes before starting a trip.

The fatal victim of the second attack was shot while walking on the same road. His attackers then warned the person accompanying him that they would attack the village of Matapata, the source added.

The Cabo Delgado region has been beset with attacks launched by armed groups since October 2017, following years of friction between Muslims of different origins, with violence reportedly originating in radicalised mosques.

At least 300 people have died, according to official and unofficial figures, and 60,000 residents have been affected, many forced to relocate for their own safety, according to the United Nations.
