A group of 10 Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) members have joined the ranks of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) as part of the demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration of Renamo’s armed wing, the corporation commander announced.
Their integration comes at the end of a 110-day training course, Bernardino Rafael said at the closing ceremony in Maputo, and is the result of the peace agreement signed by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo president Ossufo Momade in August, 2019.
The demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration (DDR) process results from the understanding reached between the Mozambican government and Renamo leadership in the context of the peace negotiations which were the main cause espoused by Filipe Nyusi in his January 2015 presidential inauguration speech.
The general commander of the police asked Renamo men to obey the commander-in-chief of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces, Filipe Nyusi, adding that he was confident that the new PRM members would approach police work in a professional manner, respecting the law of the land in order to contribute to the country’s stability.
“They have finished their integral training, comprising of ethics, patriotic education which governs the homeland, command in leadership, self-defence, physical preparation and order, all united in what characterises us,” he said.
Speaking at the same occasion, Renamo Secretary-General André Magibire said the DDR process “is moving”, without giving further details “due to the sensitivity of the matter.”
“We are fulfilling what was for us to fulfil. They asked us for a list of ten and we gave it, and it is these ten who are passing out today. We will inform you in due course of the next steps to be taken,” he said.
Since the signing of a memorandum of understanding last August, the Frelimo government has placed a total of 14 Renamo officers in armed forces command and leadership posts, plus 10 more officers yesterday, making a total of 24.
