The head of the Supreme Court of Mozambique, Adelino Muchanga, defended the identification of the reasons behind the murders and trafficking of human organs in the country in order to fight against this type of crime.
“Why is one person able to take the life of another just to make money? There are deep reasons that must be identified to effectively combat this evil,” said Adelino Muchanga, quoted on Tuesday by public radio station Radio Mozambique.
Muchanga spoke about the homicides linked to the trafficking of human organs in Mozambique when asked about the murder and removal of organs from a nine-year-old child, in the city of Quelimane, capital of Zambezia province, central Mozambique, last week.
“All the institutions involved in the investigation, from the police to the public prosecutor’s office and the courts, have to identify the principals and hold them accountable,” said Adelino Muchanga.
The murder of the minor in Quelimane is not an isolated case, because there have been similar situations elsewhere in the country.
The minor was found on 17 November in the dump of a market in Quelimane, without eyes, heart and skull.
Two primary school teachers are being detained in connection with the case.
In Mozambique and some neighbouring countries, killings for the removal of human organs have been associated with superstitious beliefs, since the perpetrators believe that treatments based on certain organs bring wealth.
