In a message released in Maputo on Thursday Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa congratulated Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on his reelection on October 15, adding that he he expects closer relations between the two countries to develop.
“I am confident that in this new mandate, fraternal relations between our countries and our peoples, deeply linked by history and a common language, will continue to grow closer,” the message released by the Mozambican Presidency reads.
António Costa says that there is “a personal commitment from the Portuguese Government to deepen these ties and strengthen cooperation in the various fields of bilateral and multilateral activity, and in particular within the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries”.
The results of the October 15 elections, pending validation by the Constitutional Council, gave the ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) a great advantage.
Filipe Nyusi was reelected in the first round for a second term as president with 73% of the votes, while Frelimo proved able to elect 184 of the 250 Assembly of the Republic deputies, a 73.6% majority and more than two thirds of the seats.
