The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine, told @Verdade that the coastal protection on sections of Maputo’s Avenida Marginal, damaged just over a month ago, will be repaired by the company that wins the concession to charge tolls on the Mozambican capital’s ring road.
Built about five years ago by an Egyptian and Portuguese consortium called RME/MCA Limitada, the Maputo coastal protection barrier has not withstood the tides and bad weather of the beginning of the rainy season. Some sections have collapsed and others are about to do so.
Maputo City Council president Eneas Comiche told @Verdade that there was no guarantee of maintenance by the consortium that carried out the original US$22 million works. The municipality had no money for the repairs, he explained, and had applied to the government for the costs of rehabilitation.
Questioned by @Verdade, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources revealed that the repairs would be undertaken by the company that wins the concession to charge tolls on the Mozambican capital’s ring road.
“There is work being done to concession the ring road, and roads in Mozambique in general. The concessionaire will intervene,” Machatine said.
