The city of Maputo this Monday and Tuesday hosts a civil society summit on the development of the oil and gas industry in Mozambique. The participation of diverse sectors, including representatives of local communities, is expected.
The civic summit takes place in anticipation of a business summit on the same theme scheduled just two days later, also in Maputo, and set to focus on opportunities and conditions for investment and business development in the hydrocarbon industry in Mozambique.
The civil society summit will emphasise the opportunities and challenges of participatory and inclusive governance in this strategic sector of the national economy, including reflections on a regulatory and fiscal framework conducive to fair revenue generation, and its transparent management in the interests of sustainable development.
The civic summit will also promote open think tanks on the social and environmental impacts of the extractive industry, mechanisms for safeguarding the rights of affected communities and spreading the benefits from sector revenues fairly.
The aim of the civic summit on oil and gas is to supplement purely business approaches to the development of the extractive industry, with the prospects for participation, inclusion, tax justice and balanced development of the Mozambican economy under consideration.
The participation of government institutions, the private and academic sectors, as well as civil society organizations and representatives of local communities, is confirmed.
