Mozambique: Chapo calls on all to take part in “Inclusive Dialogue”
VOA / "It is a demonstration of the people (...) and we have about one million, five hundred thousand people," João Massango, Ecology Party.
More than twenty Mozambican political parties which do not have parliamentary representation are organizing a demonstration in Maputo on 21 and 22 May to protest against the undisclosed debt and political and military conflict currently characterizing the situation in the country.
The political and military impasse between the government and Renamo, the country’s main opposition party, has caused dozens of deaths, particularly in the centre of the country, while undisclosed state-guaranteed debts totalling more than US$1.4 billion have led to the withdrawal of support by major donors, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
“We call on the government and Renamo to cease military hostilities immediately (…) and on the government to go to parliament and account for the debt,” João Massango, secretary general of the Ecology Party, said on behalf of the group.
Massango said that all the necessary information about the demonstration had been passed to the authorities, including the attorney general’s office, ministry of the interior, national assembly and municipal council.
The organizing parties will now mobilize civil society organizations and people to join the demonstration, Massango said.
“It is a demonstration of the people, and we have about one million, five hundred thousand people,” he said – a number which corresponds to the combined population of Maputo and Matola cities. But Massango says that, given the relevance of the claim, many will turn out. “All the oppressed people, when the matter concerns all (…) will take to the streets, provided it is within the law.”
“We are requesting the police ensure that people demonstrate peacefully, with no vandalism or individuals creating problems,” he added.
In addition to the Ecology Party, the group includes the PDD (led by former Renamo number two by Raul Domingos), the MPD, PRD, ALIMO, MJRD and SOL.
