President advocates legal reforms in judiciary – Mozambique

Representatives from all sectors of the administration of justice went on Tuesday to the Ponta Vermelha palace, official residence of Mozambique’s head of state, for a meeting on the occasion of the Legality Day.
The magistrates gave President Nyusi a gift in recognition of his role in the country’s peace process, President of the Administrative Tribunal Machatine Munguambe commenting: “Our memento is a picture symbolising the ineluctable need for peace, to create conditions for human advancement in Mozambique.”
The country’s magistrates used the occasion to renew their commitment to doing everything necessary in defence of legality.
“We have come to renew the commitment we have sworn before your excellency and in public, to do everything we can to meet the needs of the Mozambican population,” Munguambe said.
Filipe Nyusi in his answering message praised the role of the justice sector and, in the light of the five-year review, highlighted the progress made.
“I want to continue to encourage the great effort you are making. The people know what a lawful country is, and they know who is enforcing the law in Mozambique,” President Nyusi said.
Nevertheless, the president observed, many challenges remained, some with judiciary reforms as their solution.
“There is a need to improve the efficiency and credibility of the judiciary. It must undergo legal reform and structural and organisational change in order to improve transparency and control of judicial operators,” the president said.
Today is Legality Day, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Mozambican judicial system.
