Journalist António Janeiro, Notícias’ correspondent in Beira city and one of the most respected journalists in Mozambique, has died after a long illness.
Noticias’ Elisa Benedito says Janeiro was like a rock, always ready to go out on an reporting mission, even on his days off. Colleagues Horacio João and Julia Ferrao say they are mourning the death of a master and true teacher of journalism.
Praise for the veteran also comes from Radio Mozambique, where journalists Amílcar Cassamo and Cristina Xavier have spoken of their professional friendship and camaraderie, as have so many in the profession.
Television of Mozambique journalist Candida Duarte believes that Mozambique has lost a shining example of how a journalist should position him or herself in the profession.
Antonio Janeiro was born in Tete province’s Mutarara district in January, 1966, and joined Notícias in Beira in 1987. He turned 50 on May 4 of this year.
