National Election Commission (CNE) president Abdul Carimo Sau said on Sunday (27) that representatives of the opposition parties in Mozambique had failed to produce any evidence for denunciations to the CNE of alleged irregularities since the census and up until the voting in this year’s general elections.
Announcing the general tabulation of the results of the 6th Presidential, Legislative and 3rd Provincial Assembly Elections, the CNE president revealed that, during the debate on the content of national centralisation and the general tabulation of the vote of 15 October “some members of the Elections Commission” reported irregularities at polling stations before and during the operations, and in the centralisation and tabulation sessions of the district or city electoral committees, and electoral offences pertaining to previous phases, but “without presenting evidence”.
“After the presentation of the maps of national centralisation and general tabulation during the National Assembly session of 26 of October, 2019, representatives of the Renamo, Nova Democracia and Somos parties took the floor and made a retrospective statement of reported irregularities, from the voter registration to the voting and partial tabulation phase, district centralization and tabulation and provincial centralization, without providing material evidence of the above facts,” Abdul Carimo Sau said.
The results announced by the CNE, which give the Frelimo party and its candidates a big victory, will be submitted within the next five days to the Constitutional Council, which will have to proclaim the winner in two weeks, if no further action resulting from electoral appeals to electoral bodies is adjudged necessary.
