General in the Reserve Alberto Joaquim Chipande’s 80th birthday celebrations took place in his home district of Mueda, starting with a mass in Mbuo church attended by hundreds of family members , friends, and trench colleagues.
A celebration dinner followed the ceremony, Chipande delivering a didactic and historical speech to the event’s more than one hundred guests.
The commemoration of General Chipande’s birthday coincided with the announcement of the results of the 2019 general election, and the birthday boy spared no criticism of those allegedly railing against the victory of Frelimo and its candidate, Filipe Nyusi.
In addition to the religious ceremony and the dinner, festivities included a football tournament and a show celebrating the life and work of the general, who was born October 10, 1939, in Mueda, a district considered the cradle of Mozambique’s struggle for independence.
