Mozambique: Government needs 2.1 billion meticais to cope with the present rainy season

Weather forecasts for the 2019-2020 rainy season are pointing to above-normal rainfall, windstorms, cyclones, floods and urban flooding, affecting 1,618,000 people across various areas of Mozambique. But the contingency plan designed to address these risks will cost 2.1 billion meticais.
Right now the executive is short of 1.2 billion, with “the World Bank and the Disaster Management Fund making the rest available,” Minister of State Admnistration Carmelita Namashulua explained on behalf of the government.
As to where will these 1.2 billion meticais will be found, the government has not yet named names, but says the source will be the usual partners and civil society. But it is not just money that the government needs, to be able to better respond to the exigencies of the 2019-2020 rainy season. “We have to mobilise air and ground support, as well as search and rescue operations where necessary,” Minister Namashulua adds.
Sectors likely to be directly impacted by the weather include education, health, agriculture and food. As to the latter, the government estimates that it will need 4,410 tonnes of food to assist 150,000 people between January and March 2020. About 2,000 tonnes are already available, with the deficit of 2,400 tonnes valued at about 190 million meticais.
