At an extraordinary meeting in Maputo this morning, the Renamo political commission is hoping to reach a decision on the results of the 15 October elections, which it considers “the result of ever so big a fraud”.
The party president says it is urgent for the party to reach consensus on the results.
“The desire of the Mozambicans and the international community was that these elections, preceded by the signing of the (Definitive) Peace Agreement and National Reconciliation, and Pope Francis’ visit to our country, were to be free, fair and transparent. Contrary to this common and genuine will, we have shamefully had elections fraudulent [to a degree] never before seen in our country and around the world,” Ossufo Momade said in a keynote speech at a meeting extended to other officials.
Both Momade and Renamo’s head of list for Maputo province António Muchanga have considered these elections “shameful”.
The party’s decision will be known later this afternoon, with O País positioned to follow events.
