The European Union Election Observation Mission in Mozambique on Saturday deployed to the provinces its 76 short term observers.
This group arrived in Maputo on Thursday, and set off for the provinces after a training session on Mozambican voting procedures.
They join the 32 long term observers who deployed on 14 September. The Mission expects further observers in the next couple of days, so that on polling day, next Tuesday, the EU will have about 150 observers on the ground.
The Mission will observe the logistics for the vote, the voting and the count at the polling stations, and the tabulation of votes at district, provincial and national level.
The EU Mission plans to issue a preliminary declaration with its initial findings two days after the vote. A detailed report, containing the Missions conclusions, and recommendations for the future, will be issued some weeks after the election.
The Mission stresses that it operates in an ”independent and impartial” manner. It does not take instructions from outside bodies (including the EU itself). Instead, the mission says it is “obliged to obey a Code of Conduct, ruled by international norms in matters of election observation”.
