Mozambique: Simango promises improved water supply in Manica – Photos

Daviz Simango, the leader and presidential candidate of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), on Wednesday promised the voters of Guro district, in the central province of Manica, that, if the MDM wins the general elections scheduled for 15 October, it will improve the road network and water supply in this part of the country.
Simango has been experiencing the country’s rural roads at first hand, making a point of driving across the central Mozambican provinces, rather than using a plane or helicopter.
At the first village he visited in Guro, Simango asked to see the water supply. He found it was an unprotected artisanal well. Filmed by the independent television station STV, he risked taking a few sips of the water from this well before proclaiming it as unfit for human consumption.
He asked why the authorities have not installed a decent well, or drilled a borehole in this area, and promised that the MDM, if elected, will ensue that clean water reaches the largest possible number of villages in the rural interior.
“You will not be alone”, he declared. “The MDM will be here to solve your problems, as long as you entrust your votes to Daviz Simango and to our party”.
Cited by the Maputo daily “Noticias”, he also pledged that an MDM government will build more rural health units, reducing the distances that patients have to walk.
He claimed that is this part of Guro the nearest health unit is 35 kilometres away. “How can a pregnant woman travel this distance?, he asked. “With the MDM, this will finish, because we shall bring basic services closer to citizens”.
