A mob lynched four people they imagined to be criminals on Wednesday afternoon in Cuamba district, in the northern Mozambican province of Niassa.
According the the Niassa Provincial Police Command, the victims were three workers and a security guard from the Gemes Group, a company that exploits mineral resources in Cuamba.
The spokesperson for the provincial command, Alves Mathe, told AIM on Thursday that the killings occurred because, following a rise in crime in Cuamba, members of the local community leaped to the conclusion that the four men were criminals, apparently on the sole grounds that they were not from Niassa. All four victims were from Montepuez district, in the neighbouring province of Cabo Delgado.
“The local population suspected that they were carrying out thefts, and were trafficking in human body parts”, said Mathe.
He said the police have detained two people who were allegedly involved in the lynchings. Mathe added that the incident has nothing to do with the current election campaign.
