Opposition parties accused of plagiarising Frelimo – AIM report

The head of the central brigade of Mozambique’s ruling party, sent to assist the election campaign in the northern province of Nampula, Margarida Talapa, has accused opposition parties of plagiarising Frelimo’s election manifesto.

Speaking at the end of a march by Frelimo supporters through the streets of the coastal town of Moma, Talapa said the plagiarists had no ideas or perspectives of their own, and are happy just to steal the ideas of others.

“Should such people be entrusted with commanding the destinies of Mozambique?”, she asked.

By way of example, she cited boasts by opposition parties that they will eliminate all fees for state owned schools up to the end of secondary education.

“Our President (Filipe Nyusi) announced this fact, but we hear some parties declaring this intention as if it were their own and was something new”, Talapa said. “Because of their lack of ideas, they even imitate the songs of our party”.

School enrolment was already free of charge for primary education, and earlier this year, the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, passed a bill, proposed by the government, abolishing fees for all of general secondary education. Hence, as from 2020, education from first to ninth grade will be free.

The leader and presidential candidate of the main opposition party, Renamo, Ossufo Momade, has repeatedly promised to abolish school fees. The sole difference from current government policy is that Momade would extend the abolition of fees to 10th grade (the first of the two pre-university years).

Talapa told the voters of Moma that continued development of Mozambique is only guaranteed if Frelimo remains in power.

“The road from Nampula city to Nametil is being paved, and this work will continue to Moma and Angoche, because Frelimo wants to finish what it began”, she said. “That’s why it is necessary that, on 15 October, you should vote for our candidate, Filipe Nyusi, and for our party”.

Also in Moma, the Renamo district election agent, Maro Luis, complained that the local police have paid no attention to Renamo complaints of supposed violations of the electoral law committed by Frelimo, such as the destruction of Renamo election propaganda by Frelimo members.

The Renamo election brigades in Moma are promising to bring fish processing factories to this fishing district, and to provide jobs for young people. Luis complained that currently people who have completed their education “cannot find jobs and this contributes to the increase in crime”.
