Mozambique: Armed group attacks passenger bus and cargo lorry in Malema – Carta

At 5:55m p.m. last Friday (13 September), just over 15 heavily armed men attacked a bus and a heavy goods transport vehicle 40 km from the Malema district village headquarters in Nampula province.
The attack resulted in the death of the bus driver and left five passengers injured, according to ‘Carta’ sources in the northwest of Nampula province. Money and belongings were also stolen.
The vehicles were travelling from neighbouring Cuamba district in the southeast of Niassa province, and were attacked on the stretch of road between the Malema headquarters village and Nacata.
Official sources told Carta that three of those injured were receiving medical care at Nampula Central Hospital.
According to the survivors, the men who attacked the vehicles were armed with AK-47s, pistols and bladed weapons and spoke Chisena and Ndau [languages]. They demanded that the passengers hand over their money and remain still.
An official source say that that current scenario is one of fear, affecting even the election campaign, with political parties suspending their usual canvassing.
This is the second attack in Nampula province in two years.
On 27 August 2017, two individuals attacked the police station in Nametil, Mogovolas district, and stole firearms. They entered the police station on the pretext of lodging a complaint against a third party, but once inside the premises drew pistols, murdering one full-time police officer and seriously injuring another agent.
Carta attempted over the weekend to get a police version of events, but without success.
