Mozambique’s Interior Minister has suspended the police commander in Nampula over the deaths at a rally there, National Director of Inspection Moises Augusto told a press conference in Nampula this morning.
The decision to suspend Joaquim Silva as police commander follows the incident in the Stadium 25 de Junho at the end of Frelimo candidate Filipe Nyusi’s rally there yesterday, where a crush resulted in 10 deaths and over 90 suffering injuries of varying degree. Eight persons are still in intensive care at Nampula Central Hospital, while eight others remain hospitalised in the orthopaedics and surgery wards at the same facility.
The rest of those injured were discharged after first aid, Augusto said, adding that an investigation would be opened to establish the facts.
Today, Frelimo General Secretary Roque Silva, accompanied by other Frelimo members, went to the hospital to learn about the status of those hospitalised.
Roque Silva said in an interview that Frelimo would provide all necessary follow-up to victims and families who have lost loved ones.
