FACIM: German companies eyeing Mozambican extractive industry

State-of-the-art engineering, information and communication technologies, machinery and equipment characterise Germany’s presence at this edition of the Maputo International Fair. Brazil is also making a strong showing.
Maputo International Fair (FACIM), Mozambique’s largest trade and industrial fair, is drawing entrepreneurs from various sectors to the capital, Maputo.
Eleven companies from Germany – Europe’s largest economy – are seeking partnerships with small and medium Mozambican enterprises as well as with the multinationals exploiting natural resources in the country.
They are showcasing heavy machinery to attract investors in the extractive industry.
Solutions for the mining sector
Hytec Services Mozambique, based in Beluluane Industrial Park, Matola, has brought a high-tech hydraulic and pneumatic drive machine to FACIM this year. Company representative Amândio Cumbane is receiving a constant stream of visitors and giving explanations to people interested in the machine.
“It is a system which was developed to transport minerals, and pulls conveyor belts using a new, simpler and more effective electrical system,” he explains.
The company responds to the challenges of the mining sector, especially in Mozambique. Hytec has been around for 20 years and Amândio Cumbane has no doubt about its importance in coal mining.
“This equipment is used in heavy industry. It has applications In mining, and for factories. You can use the unit to compress material like coal. It can even granulate the product,” he adds.
FACIM is the largest and an important international showcase for German companies in Mozambique. The German-African Business Association, a trade bridge between Germany and the African continent, has already made contact with several Mozambican companies with a view to forming partnerships, the association’s Lisa Steinbacher says.
“We have already held talks with Mozambican companies, and we hope that they will result in actual partnerships. We believe that many such partnerships will be formed during the course of the exhibition,” she says.
Brazil brings 10 companies
Germany is far from alone at the fair. For example, Brazil, the largest economy in South America, has brought ten companies, also looking to establish partnerships.
Gustavo Buttes, head of the Brazilian business mission at FACIM, says the focus is on the extractive industry.
“Of course, we coming here in the wake of the recent discoveries of oil and gas in northern Mozambique. It is undoubtedly a sector that arouses a lot of interest. But I think that, in the industrial area and in the offer of products, our stand is very representative,” he said
Mozambique’s business environment is favourable, Buttes says – which is why Brazil wants to maintain a firm presence here.
FACIM started last Monday and ends on Sunday 1 September.
