Angola: $300M required to clear minefields

The Angolan government needs $300 million (€269.7 million) to clear its remaining 1,220 minefields by 2025.
According to Adriano Gonçalves, head of demining and humanitarian assistance, the provinces of Cuando Cubango, Moxico, Kwanza Sul and Bié are still the most affected in the country.
Adriano Gonçalves, who was speaking on the sidelines of the strategy for mine action in Angola seminar, said that support for the Angolan demining process has been decreasing for ten years.
“Angola is not yet a mine-free country,” and still has “105 million square metres affected”.
According to Adriano Gonçalves, 12 years ago Angola had 3,600 minefields and today has 1,220, noting that there are provinces that can now be considered mine-free, including Malanje, Namibe and Huambo.
Currently, quality control teams are carrying out reverification work in these provinces.
