Not satisfied with police accounts of the dumped bodies and rumoured mass grave in Manica province, parliament is to send a delegation to the centre of the country to investigate allegations of human rights violations, the body’s Standing Committee announced yesterday.
The Standing Committee has mandated the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Human Rights and Legality “to go find out, on the ground, the actual situation and then report back to parliament”.
The proposal was moved by the parliamentary leader of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), Lutero Simango, who also requested the discussion of the conflict in the centre of the country at the next plenary session of parliament on 22 June.
Meanwhile, Manica police announced, also yesterday that all the 13 bodies discovered by journalists had been buried where they were found already on Saturday, adding that their identification had not been possible, reportedly due to the bodies advanced stage of decomposition. In a press briefing, police in Manica further denied that any mass grave exists in that province.
