The Constitutional Council (CC) of Mozambique yesterday accepted the current head of state, Filipe Nyusi, and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade as candidates for the presidential election in a ruling which accepts two more candidacies and rejects a further three for irregularities. In addition to incumbent Filipe Nyusi and Ossufo Momade, from the largest opposition party, the Constitutional Council has also validated the nominations of Daviz Simango, leader of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), and Mário Albino, from the extra-parliamentary party United Movement for Salvation Action Party Integral (AMUSI).
The document rejects the applications of Eugénio Estêvão, Hélder Mendonça and Alice Mabote on the grounds of them having too few supporters.
Mozambican activist Alice Mabota had 5,611 invalid proponents out of a total of 13,160 submitted, the court found, while Helder Mendonça, grandson of Frelimo veteran Francisco Manyanga, saw the invalidation of 4,147 proponents of the total of 12,250.
Lastly, Eugénio Estevão had 7,732 invalid applicants out of 11,340 submitted.
Mozambican law determines that applications, with a printed photograph of the candidate, must contain a minimum of 10,000 and a maximum of 20,000 supporting signatures, and must be validated by a notary public.
General elections in Mozambique are scheduled for October 15.
