Unidentified armed men attack passenger bus and lorry in central Mozambique

Gunmen attacked a passenger bus and a lorry on Wednesday in Nhamapadza, Sofala province, central Mozambique, injuring the driver and co-driver of one of the vehicles, witnesses told Lusa today.
The attack took place about 200 kilometres from Gorongosa district, where the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and the leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, Ossufo Momade, today sign the agreement to end the military hostilities.
The lorry came to a standstill following the gunfire, but the bus was able to continue on its way, albeit with bullet holes in its sides. Both vehicles were heading towards Nhamapadza – Gorongosa.
The stretch of road where the attack took place was the scene of regular vehicle attacks during clashes between the Renamo and Defence and Security Forces between 2013 and 2015.
A journalist living in Beira, the capital of Sofala province, told Lusa that, following the attack in Nhampadza, the crew of a passenger bus that was supposed to go to the city of Quelimane, Zambezia province, in the same region, postponed the trip for fear of suffering a similar fate.
The attack came just hours after the Mozambican president announced in parliament that he would sign an agreement to end military hostilities with the Renamo leader today.
In recent weeks, a sub-group of guerrillas in the armed wing of the main opposition party has warned the government that it would continue military hostilities if the cessation of military hostilities was signed with Ossufo Momade, and demanding that he resign as president of Renamo.
The group has warned that it will not accept the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration process that began on Monday as long as Momade remains Renamo president.
