Mozambique: President says Cabo Delgado attacks aim to slow country’s development

Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi said yesterday that the attacks by armed groups in the north of Cabo Delgado were aimed at slowing the country’s development, but that the people would not be cowed.

“We are sending a strong warning to these evildoers to stop their macabre actions, which only delay development, because the Mozambicans have realised that these acts only contribute to slowing the development of the country, and we will therefore never bow,” the head of state said.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony at the Police Sergeants School of the Republic of Mozambique in the central province of Sofala, the head of state thanked the community for its cooperation with the authorities in denouncing people allegedly involved with armed groups in the region.

“We also recognise the role of communities in the affected areas, which have collaborated with the defence and security forces, helping to reduce the room for manoeuver available to these enemies of Mozambique,” he said.

Cabo Delgado province, the scene of intense activity by multinationals preparing to extract natural gas there, has been the scene of attacks by armed men which have killed more than 200 people since October 2017.

Dozens of arrests in the region have failed to contain the violence in Cabo Delgado, with attacks by armed groups and accusations of human rights abuses against the Defense and Security Forces multiplying.

The United Nations has already warned of the rise of “terrorist groups” and drug trafficking in Mozambique, particularly in the north, saying that the country was vulnerable after the passage there of two tropical cyclones this year, one of which hit Cabo Delgado.
