Voter registration: Mozambican government asks for an “equilibrium point”

The Mozambican Minister of State Administration has asked for an “equilibrium point” between the National Statistics Institute (INE) and electoral bodies, in the face of discrepancies in voter registration data in Gaza province.
“We are following [the events], but we know very well that the STAE, CNE and INE all work and have credibility, so we will let these institutions effectively find an equilibrium point,” Carmelita Namashulua was quoted on (22-07) by private TV channel STV on Monday as saying.

In focus is voter registration data compiled by the electoral bodies, which, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), only makes sense as a projection for the population of Gaza province, southern Mozambique, in 2040. The INE says Mozambican electoral bodies have registered hundreds of thousands more voters than the population old enough to vote in Gaza province.
But both INE and the National Election Commission (CNE) have told the press that their results are reliable.
The numbers make Gaza the only province in Mozambique with more voters than the population of voting age, which could have an impact on voting results in the October 15 general elections.
Gaza province normally votes for the ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), and the voter registration data discrepancy is seen as the result of an attempt to manipulate the register in its favour.
