Mozambique’s third-largest political party, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), told President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal on Friday that Mozambique is living in an undeclared state war.
“We had the opportunity to present the MDM’s position in relation to the current situation in our country and we said very clearly that Mozambique is facing two major challenges: an undeclared war and the issue of public debt,” the head of the MDM in parliament Lutero Simango told reporters.
Describing the meeting as interesting, Simango said that the MDM argued that Mozambicans should mobilize to solve the problems they faced, and hold the authors of the situation in which the country finds itself responsible.
“Mozambicans have a responsibility to provide an adequate response, so that we can all of us renew the hope of Mozambicans, above all, to build a country for future generations,” Simango said.
The meeting with the MDM was held in keeping with President Rebelo de Sousa’s desire to hold meetings with former rulers and all of Mozambique’s political leaders.
Rebelo de Sousa’s four-day state visit ended on Friday. It was the first he had undertaken since taking office, and one dominated by calls for peace in the country.
Mozambique’s economic situation also felt the Portuguese head of state’s visit, confirming as it did on Wednesday the suspension of disbursements to the state budget from the G14 donor group currently chaired by Portugal following the revelation of debts deliberately kept off the public accounts.
