Although the action of the insurgents terrorising the province of Cabo Delgado is now, according to Minister Salvador Mtumuke, confined to the districts of Palma, Macomia and Mocímboa da Praia, they continue to reap lives and destroy assets, independent newssheet ‘Carta de Moçambique’ reports today.
Last Thursday, July 11, two villages in Mocímboa da Praia district suffered attacks by the insurgents, resulting in one death and the burning down of several huts.
The first attack reported to ‘A Carta’ happened at around 7:00 p.m. in Malinde village, Mbau administrative post, where, according to sources, the victims were farmers harvesting the last of their rice crops.
One woman was seriously injured by a bullet, and was assisted at the Miangalewa Health Centre, in Muidumbe district. The A Carta sources said that the insurgents went on to burn several huts and rice and sesame plantations and steal a considerable amount of cereal and other food products.
The other attack reported to ‘A Carta’ occurred on the same night in Makulo village, which is about 20 kilometres from the headquarters village.
According to sources, one woman was killed in the attack and several huts set on fire, the attackers again making off with food items. The sources also reveal that the victims were part of a group of families who decided to return to the area after it had regained a degree of stability.
Makulo is said to have been one of the first villages in the interior of Mocímboa da Praia to be attacked, in October 2017.
