Unknown assailants attacked and savagely beat Andre Txetema, the Deputy Chairperson of the Alto Molocue Municipal Assembly in the central Mozambican province of Zambezia, on Thursday night.
According to a report in the Quelimane-based electronic paper “Txopela”, he was attacked at his home, by men who gave no explanation for why they were beating him. Txtema is said to be in a serious condition and is undergoing medical care in Nampula Central Hospital.
Txtema is the only member of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) in the Municipal Assembly and since there are ten members of Frelimo and ten members of Renamo, his vote has become crucial.
Without his vote, neither Frelimo nor Renamo can pass anything in the Assembly. At the last session of the Assembly Txetema voted with Renamo against the annual plan of activities for the municipality.
The plan comes up for a second vote next Wednesday.
If Txetema is unable to attend the next session of the Assembly, his place should be taken by the next person on the MDM list of candidate for last October’s municipal elections. So the murderous attack on Txetema should not change the political party balance on the Municipal Assembly.
