Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said on Thursday that “Portugal’s presidency of the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2021, will have a summit meeting between Europe and Africa.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made the announcement during a conversation with the president of Mozambique at the second edition of the “EurAfrican Forum”, an initiative by the Portuguese Diaspora Association at the Carcavelos campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
De Sousa told reporters that the Portuguese government has said there would be an EU/Africa summit in the first half of 2021, though there had not been an official announcement.
The president also commented that the summit would go ahead “whatever government came out of the next elections, slated for 6 October.
The first EU/Africa summit was organised by Portugal when it held the presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2000 and was held in Cairo.
