Zambezia provincial government is trying to mobilise at least nine million meticais (around US$144 thousand, at current exchange rates) to repair two barge ferries, the ‘Zambeze’ and the ‘Mutarara’, which have been out of action for years now, spokesman João Moutinho told a press conference in Quelimane last week.
The ‘Mutarara’ barge, which has been inoperative since August 2017, made the crossing between Nhacatiua in the Luabo district and Chacuma in Chinde district. A multi-sectoral inspection made up of Transmaritima, INAMARGO and Chinde government authorities established that the ‘Mutarara’ had a leaking deck.
Meanwhile, Moutinho reported, the ‘Zambeze’ barge suspended services in May 2015. This barge used to operate the Quelimane and Ricamba (Inhassunge district) routes and experienced repeated malfunctions before it was docked too, four years ago.
The government has consequently decided to mobilise at least nine million meticais to ensure the return of both vessels to operation as soon as possible, announced João Moutinho on Wednesday ( July 26), speaking to the press on the sidelines of the XI ordinary session of the provincial government..
Last week”s session saw the Zambézia’s provincial government also analysing the combatants’ pension settlement process, new procedures for issuing identity cards, and the resettlement of families resulting from the exploitation of mineral resources in the Chinde and Inhassunge districts in the south of the province.
