Mozambicans linked to armed groups detained in the DRC

The commander-in-chief of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Bernardino Rafael, has confirmed that 12 Mozambican citizens are currently being detained in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking at a rally in Nampula province on Tuesday, Rafael said that the 12 youths in question had been lured by members of armed groups to travel to the DRC with the promise of continuing their studies, state-owned broadcaster Radio Mozambique reported on Wednesday (12-06).

According to Rafael, the Mozambicans were recruited in the northern province of Nampula, next to Cabo Delgado, which has been the scene of armed attacks perpetrated by unknown groups since October 2017.

Extradition

Rafael said that the Mozambican authorities were having difficulty securing the extradition of the 12 young men.

Studies of the origins of armed groups in the north of Cabo Delgado indicate that they might have links to armed jihadist groups operating in parts of the DRC.

This month, a website associated with the Islamic State broadcast a statement in which an alleged branch of the group in East Africa claimed to have killed an undetermined number of Mozambican military personnel in clashes in Cabo Delgado.
