About João Cabral
Guitarist, composer, arranger and producer for more than twenty and five years, João Cabral bets on innovation and creativity through music and the various forms of art in the African landscape.
At 17, he played guitar at the church and was attracted to rock. He started playing Dire Straits, Pink Floyd and Santana, until he listened to George Benson and Earl Klugh, love jazz while listening to "We Live Here" albums by Pat Metheny Group and "Funky River" by Lee Ritenoure and started studying the rhythm in 1995.
Self-taught, at first, João Cabral began playing in public in 1997 in Maputo, until moving to Cape Town in 2003 to obtain a Diploma in Music Performance (Jazz Performance) in 2007. He has performed in several shows and festivals in South Africa, Ghana, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique, Tanzania, Brazil, the United States, Malaysia, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia and Lithuania. He also acted as a guest musician with the Glomus International Orchestra, a multi-cultural project of high demand.
Cabral has numerous original compositions within the Afro-Jazz musical tradition, combining traditional and modern jazz elements. The album "River of Dreams" was in the Top 20 of World Music in 2010 in Europe and in the Top 10 RDP - Africa of Portugal. His album won the Top Instrumental Award, the 2010 edition of the MMA (Mozambican Music Awards).
