Zimbabwe brings back maize import ban after bumper harvest
Business Day Live / The EFF being removed from Parly.
South African president Jacob Zuma’s budget vote debate got off to a rocky start on Wednesday afternoon when the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were evicted from the National Assembly after they shouted at Mr Zuma, demanding that he leave the house and effectively preventing him from speaking.
After refusing to take their seats or be silent, National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete summoned Parliament’s protection services to remove the EFF MPs. Some went without a struggle but others had to be forcibly removed from the house.
Earlier the EFF called for the president to be forbidden to address the National Assembly because he had violated the Constitution, and was again facing corruption charges. The North Gauteng High Court found last week that the dropping of 783 charges against was irrational and set aside, paving the way for the charges to be reinstated. This after the Constitutional Court found in March that Mr Zuma had failed to uphold the Constitution in the Nkandla matter.
EFF MP Godrich Gardee proposed that because Mr Zuma had breached the Constitution and was again facing fraud and corruption charges it was wrong for him to address the National Assembly.
EFF chief whip Floyd Shivambu said he had written to National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete asking that she not allow Mr Zuma to speak.
The house descended into chaos when the EFF screamed in unison that Mr Zuma should be ejected from the house.
