Nampula mayor says has been receiving death threats for three months

The president of the Nampula Municipal Council, Paulo Vahanle, (Renamo), says he has been receiving death threats on his cell phone for three months.
The phone call threats demand that the Nampula mayor leaves office and goes back to being a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic [parliament]. However, Vahanle says he has not yet submitted a complaint to the authorities.
“The person calls and says that I have to leave the municipality and that, if I continue, I will lose my life because I am occupying a place that already has an owner,” Vahanle says, adding that the same source reveals that there is a plan to take his life.
Despite this, Vahanle has not yet taken the case to the authorities for investigation, but has shared the matter with the members of the Nampula municipal assembly.
Police spokesman Zacarias Nacute has advised the mayor to take the case to the authorities “to be investigated”.
Paulo Vahanle won by-elections in Nampula (January 2018), held after the assassination of former mayor Mahamudo Amurane in October 2017.

The mayor’s revelation comes shortly after his inauguration as a result of being re-elected in last October’s local elections, and at a time when the country is preparing for general elections on 15 October next.
