South African justice minister may decide on Manuel Chang case within 2 weeks

South African Minister for Justice and Corrections, Michael Masutha, says he will be able to decide on Manuel Chang’s case by 25 May.
The former Mozambican finance minister and Assembly of the Republic deputy Manuel Chang is awaiting a decision by the South African justice minister on competing extradition requests from both to Mozambique and the United States of America.
Masutha said that administrative procedures were still ongoing, following the Kempton Park court submitting the case. Mashutha’s tenure ends in two weeks, but he considers that time enough to decide.
In the event he does not decide the matter before that date, it will pass into the hands of the next justice minister, to be appointed by the new president of South Africa.
Both the United States and Mozambican justice authorities have filed lawsuits against Chang in connection with the US$2.2 billion ‘hidden debt’ scandal.
Asked for a comment, Frelimo Political Commission member Nyeleti Mondlane said she hoped that justice would perform a fair analysis and make the best decision.
Manuel Chang has been detained in South Africa since the end of last year at the request of a US court which accuses him of financial crimes in the context of the unreported debts in question.
