Government lifts Cyclone Idai red alert

The Mozambican government today deactivated the red alert issued in March following Cyclone Idai, officially ending the mobilisation of resources for rescue operations and compulsory evacuation from risk areas.
Council of Ministers spokeswoman Ana Comoana announced that the cabinet had approved the resolution lifting the red alert, but said that the government would continue to monitor the situation and provide all necessary support to those affected by the cyclone.
Comoana said that the Cyclone Idai death toll remained static at 603, and that due to Cyclone Kenneth in the north of the country remained at 43.
“With regard to response actions, the government, with the help of international partners, particularly the World Food Program, continues to provide adequate support in terms of food assistance,” Comoana said.
Sanitation measures, including the distribution of hygiene resources to cyclone victims and the replacement of social and economic infrastructure destroyed by Idai were also continuing, she added.
The health department in the city of Beira, the worst affected by the cyclone, yesterday announced the closure of the five cholera treatment centres opened after an outbreak caused by the cyclone.
