Mozambique: Country needs €1.3M as it braces for second storm

Mozambique needs 100 million meticais (€1.3 million) to assist possible victims of Cyclone Kenneth – a storm brewing in the Southern Indian Ocean which may form a tropical cyclone and hit the north of the country on Thursday, according to the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC).
“We carried out a preliminary assessment of what the needs will be, and they are estimated at around 100 million meticais,” the director general of INGC, Augusta Maita, said on Wednesday during a break at the institution’s Coordinator Council meeting.
The institute has issued a red alert over the storm and official data shows that around 692 people are in areas in northern Mozambique considered risky.
“This is a prevision, but as long as we have a clear indication of the impact the cyclone will have we will be able to update for what is required,” Maita pointed out.
The country is still recovering from Cyclone Idai, which hit central Mozambique on 14 March killing 603 people and affecting 1.5 million.
