Mozambique: Prime Minister calls for respect for human rights in prisons
The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) has learned through the media of alleged plans for a demonstration in protest at undisclosed sovereign debt at the end of the month or in early May, coupled with Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) announcements promising to crack down on any illegal march which threatens to undermine public order.
The CNDH asserts that meetings and demonstrations are fundamental rights and that their exercise in Mozambique does not, in terms of the law, depend on any authorization, but appeals to the organizers of any march to exercise their fundamental right with due consideration for the restrictions provided for in Law 9 / 91 of 18 July in order to avoid the violent situations witnessed in the past.
CNDH also calls for the PRM to respect the legal provision exempting the authorization requirement in the case of meetings and demonstrations, with the provison respecting the obligation of warning and compliance with the requirements of Articles 4 and 5 of Law cited above. The CNDH also calls the PRM not to use firearms against citizens.
Finally, the CNDH urges all Mozambican citizens to remain calm in the face of the political and economic situation facing the country, and trust national institutions to take the necessary measures to ensure that citizens enjoy the peace, tranquillity and wellbeing they are entitled to.
