Mozambique: INGC prepared to face potential cyclone in Cabo Delgado – report

The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) has given assurances that it is paying due attention to the low pressure system situated over northern Madagascar, which could reach the northern part of Cabo Delgado province in the north of Mozambique as well as the southern parts of neighbouring Tanzania between Wednesday and Thursday.

The INGC, together with the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), the ministries of Health and Agriculture and Food Security and cooperation partners, met today in Maputo to consider the meteorological and hydrological situation of the country over the last seven days.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, INGC spokesman Paulo Tomás said it was premature to move ahead with measures in preparation for the landfall of the low pressure system, since that was as yet only a prediction.

“We will keep abreast of the evolution of this weather system. As you know, the INGC, INAM and the National Directorate of Water Resources work in an integrated manner,” he said.

He said that INAM would gather more concise information about the system in order to alert cooperation partners about possible responses to be initiated in Cabo Delgado.

An alert posted on the Facebook page of the Hurricanes, Typhoons and Cyclones centre warns of a tropical cyclone, dubbed “Kenneth”, which may have consequences for the northern part of Cabo Delgado, as well as southern Tanzania from Tuesday to the end of the month.

INAM meteorologist Acacio Tembe told reporters today that there would be an update on the weather situation by 10:00 p.m. today.

On March 14, Mozambique was hit by Tropical Cyclone Idai, which caused more than 600 deaths, left hundreds missing and displaced thousands, as well as causing widespread damage to the socioeconomic fabric of the city of Beira and the whole central part of the country. The cyclone also severely affected Zimbabwe and Malawi.
