Two individuals were found to be in possession of rhinoceros horn and detained by police in the Dondo district of Sofala Province, last Friday (April 19).
The suspected traffickers were caught in the possession of horn weighing 40 kilograms which, according to statements by one of the detainees, they were delivering to a potential buyer.
According to the police, three other persons are being investigated for their probable involvement in crimes against biodiversity.
Although the two traffickers were detained in a Gorongosa National Park buffer zone, it is unlikely that the rhino were killed in central Mozambique, since there are no rhino left in the region. It is more probable that they were hunted illegally in South Africa and the horn brought into Mozambique across porous national borders.
Mozambican ports and airports are hubs for the trafficking of poaching trophies, mainly to Asia, because of the ease with which the entire security chain can be bribed, A Verdade reports.
