Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario has encouraged people affected by cyclone Idai and the ensuing floods in the central province of Zambezia to resume their normal activities, reports Radio Mozambique.
Speaking at the Dogodani accommodation centre in the town of Namacurra, Rosario asked local officials what actions are being taken to ensure a return to normality. He was assured that some of the flood victims have already begun to build their own houses.
The centre currently accommodates about 150 households, most of them driven from their original homes by flooding along the Licungo river.
During his meeting with residents of the accommodation centre, Rosario urged them not to return to flood-prone areas, and to build their houses in safe areas, on higher ground. He guaranteed that the government will continue to accompany the process of reconstruction, and create basic conditions in the resettlement areas.
“We want to resettle people where there is water, where there is electricity, where there are health posts, where there are schools, and where each of you can cultivate your farm”, he told the crowd. “We shall follow this closely so that your lives can be rebuilt as quickly as possible”.
But Rosario insisted that the resettled population must do their part, by working to guarantee their own livelihoods. “We want people rapidly to stop stretching out their hands asking for food”, he declared.
The time had come to forget disasters and resume production. To show that he was serious, Rosario distributed maize seeds to the crowd, urging his listeners to recover their agricultural production during the second sowing season.
Members of the crowd said they recognised the efforts made by the government, but are requesting agricultural inputs, the distribution of plots of land for farming, and construction materials to build new houses.
