Mozambique to hold donors’ conference to discuss reconstruction after Idai

The government of Mozambique announced on Tuesday in Maputo that it will organise a donors’ conference in the city of Beira on May 30 to discuss reconstruction after the Idai disaster.

The devastating cyclone Idai hit the central region on the night of March 14, bringing fierce winds and flooding, leaving more than 600 people dead, 1.5 million affected and most of the city’s infrastructure damaged.

In addition to discussing about resources in need for the reconstruction process, the conference will collect from international participants the experience in the construction of resilient infrastructure.

“We have to incorporate resilient components based on the country’s history in the past years and the experience that our partners bring from other countries, which is fundamental to adapt our country to the phenomenon caused by climate change,” said Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine.

The minister was speaking during the training of technicians for assessment of damages and losses caused by cyclone Idai, which will help identify multi-sectoral and crosscutting needs and propose a recovery strategy.

The results of the evaluation will be presented during the donors’ conference to inform participants for a much more efficient intervention.

The minister said the priority will be the reconstruction of schools, hospitals, roads, bridges and transmission lines, which were important to guarantee that economic and social activities can revive as fast as possible.
