Airports of Mozambique to benefit from Portuguese and French know-how

Airports of Mozambique is to cooperate with ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal and the French VINCI Airports company in an effort to optimise airport management and sustainable growth, and reposition itself to offer in Africa airports with first-class services in line with international standards.

To achieve this objective, through the design of solutions for the exploration and development of national airports, the three entities celebrated a memorandum of understanding on Monday, April 15, in Maputo, with Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita in attendance.

Speaking at the event, Minister Mesquita said that the identification of partners with vast international experience such as ANA – Airports of Portugal and VINCI Airports was aimed at optimising Mozambican airports’ installed capacity through planning paths to an efficient exploitation of existing potential.

“We are encouraged by the proven experience of our partners such as VINCI Airports, one of the leaders in the international airport sector, which manages 45 airports in the most demanding markets such as the United States, France, United Kingdom and Portugal, including developing countries such as Cambodia, Chile, Serbia and others,” Minister Mesquita said, noting that the airports managed by VINCI Airports are served by more than 200 airlines and handle more than 195 million passengers.

From the challenges that Airports of Mozambique must overcome, the minister singled out the maintenance of acceptable levels of operability and profitability throughout the immense airport network in the country, fulfilling its role of energising the economy and boosting the development of national and international tourism.

“This memorandum also foresees partners presenting a better approach to optimal investment and concession solutions in order to develop airports in the medium and long term,” he said.

Aeroportos de Portugal chairman José Luís Arnaut said that, in 2012, his company was the object of a 50-year privatisation and concession contract with VINCI Airports, a project which so far had been very successful, having doubled from 16 million passengers in Lisbon to 30 million in just four years.

“Aeroportos de Portugal is pleased to be able to actively participate in the implementation of this MoU, which has two aspects to highlight, namely the possibility that, within our experience, we can contribute to a more in-depth study of the potential of Mozambique, because we seriously believe in the potential of tourism, economic development and the platform that Mozambique represents, and our experience with VINCI Airports, which was very positive,” he concluded.

The memorandum offers Airports of Mozambique an opportunity to take ownership of the know-how of these well-known partners in its mission to ensure the management, maintenance, planning, development of airport infrastructure, air traffic control and navigation services.
