Mozambique: Poaching “virtually under control”

Deforestation in Mozambique is to be monitored in real time through a process that will permit full knowledge of the availability of existing resources and how they are being used.
The announcement was made during the plenary meeting of the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) held last week in Maputo, promoted by the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development (MITADER) and partners.
The Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) is an informal partnership to help coordinate international support to developing countries on forest monitoring and greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting for REDD+ and related activities.
The event brought together a group of scientists from around the world committed to putting in place mechanisms to reduce carbon emissions, promote changes in land coverage and design simpler monitoring tools for forests.
In Mozambique’s case, the current system still does not produce annually updated data on levels of deforestation at a given point in the country, hampering resource management decision making.
