International salvage experts are working in the city of Beira this week on the recovery of the dredger Aruângua, beached after being swept away by the winds of Cyclone Idai.
The process of recovering the dredger – grounded for more than 15 days at the mouth of the Búzi River – is being hampered by the mud and mangroves that mark the location.
Domingos Bié, chairman of the board of directors of the Mozambican Dredging Company, said that the wind also caused the dredger Alcântara Santos to drag its anchor, although that vessel was recovered on March 21.
Although the two dredges are currently inoperative, Bié says that the Port of Beira access channel is navigable by ships of all types.
“Fortunately, when we were hit by this cyclone, the Port of Beira access channel was in good condition,” he said.
