Mozambique: US offers US$40 million to cyclone victims

The US government is to offer around $40 million (€35 million) to people affected by Cyclone Idai in central Mozambique, the counsellor of the Agency for International Development (USAID) announced on Monday.
“This number corresponds to the support we will give the country and as we continue to work with the Mozambican government the amount can rise”, Chris Milligan said at a press conference in Mozambique’s capital Maputo.
Out of the total amount, $3.5 million (€3.1 million) were made available to Mozambique’s ministry of defence for logistics support and another $33 million (€29.3 million) were given through the World Food Programme.
The remaining amount is aimed at the acquisition of tents and other materials for displaced people.
Milligan explained that “the level of support corresponds to around 200,000 tonnes of food which can feed over 1 million people”.
At a time when complaints are mounting over diversion of donations, Milligan said the US was monitoring the process closely through the US operations centre at Beira International Airport.
“We go to the centres and verify if these products are really being distributed to those who most need them”, he said.
Cyclone Idai hit the central region of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe on 14 March.
In Mozambique, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC), the cyclone has affected 1.5 million people, killed 602 and injured 1,641. The cyclone also destroyed 715,000 hectares of crop fields.
By Friday, according to the INGC, Mozambique had received a total of $36 million (€32 million) and around 12,000 tonnes of various goods to help people affected by the cyclone.
