Mozambique: Sofala sugar mills hit by Cyclone Idai

The Association of Sugar Producers of Mozambique (APAM) said today that the two sugarcane mills in the central province of Sofala suffered damage from Cyclone Idai, and that they are currently assessing the extent of the damage.

“The sugarcane industry in Marromeu and the Mozambican sugar mill [both in Sofala province] have suffered damage, the extent of which is still being evaluated,” João Jeque, the executive director of APAM, told reporters.

Sofala province was the hardest hit by Cyclone Idai, which struck central Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi on March 14.

The official number of those affected by Cyclone Idai and the subsequent floods in central Mozambique has now surpassed one million people.

According to the INGC, those affected number 1.3 million, with the death toll standing at 598 dead and the number of injured still 1,641, three weeks after the storm struck.

The figure includes all those who have lost homes and are in need food aid or some other form of assistance.
