Grass growing along the Maputo Ring Road and in abandoned plots in Chiango and Mapulene is reportedly boosting snake numbers, with reports now circulating that they have already taken their toll in victims.
The areas of Mapulene, in the Costa do Sol neighbourhood, and Chiango in Albasine have vast abandoned areas overgrown with bush, now joining up with the roadside areas of the Maputo Ring Road, creating an ideal habitat for the snakes which have reportedly been terrorising residents.
The snake in the video below is said to be highly poisonous, and would have claimed more victims had it managed to cross the road to nearby houses. It reportedly resembles the one which escaped death by stoning just a few days ago.
Local residents say snake bites are common on the roadside.
The children who play there say they have seen snakes, but expose themselves to the danger nonetheless. Some say they have lost friends and only lived to tell the tale through being fleet of foot, while others just laugh the subject off.
